Between Pictures at The Marquee, London March 1st, 1981

Between Pictures began life as the songwriting partnership of guitarist Mic Dover and bass player Paul Tucker who met at Bulmershe, a Reading teacher training college. Both were ex-members of late-70s proto-punk band, Clayson and the Argonauts, who had a faithful following on the London gig circuit during the early years of British punk rock. In 1979, Mic Dover guested a few times with Bulmershe College band Double Xposure and eventually persuaded their vocalist Alison Rolls and drummer Steve Sawtell to join Between Pictures. Alison sang and played the Farfisa keyboard on early gigs but the band soon recruited another ex-Argonaut, pianist Haydn Meddick.

The band gigged and recorded in London and South-East England and signed a record deal with Andrew Heath Music. They released two singles, Treat Me Like An Equal (1980 A-Side Records) and Birthday Card (Applause Records, 1981). The band supported various contemporary acts including Killing Joke, Level 42, The Fall, The Vapors, The Piranhas and Theatre of Hate. Steve Sawtell left the band in 1980 to be replaced by Kevin Drain from local punk group The K9s. Kevin Drain was later replaced by John Reynolds. In 1983, Between Pictures members Dover, Rolls and Reynolds dissolved the group to form Friction Groove.
